READ ON:

To bring awareness and create venues for public education about anxiety and depression illnesses, FFF has created the National Campaign on Anxiety and Depression Awareness.  Each year more than 17 million Americans will suffer with an anxiety disorder.  More than 19 million will also suffer from some type of depressive illness. The cost to the economy of these terrible diseases is billions of dollars each year; the cost in human suffering is immeasurable.

Despite all of advancements and opportunities for safe treatment, the majority of folks who suffer with anxiety and depressive illnesses do not seek treatment, drop out of treatment too quickly, are non-compliant to treatment or receive treatments that are not the most effective. Some of the reasons this occurs are the terrible stigma surrounding mental illnesses, lack of resources available to those in need (adequate insurance, community resources, knowledge of where to go for treatment, not enough treatment providers, etc) public's lack of understanding the signs and symptoms of theses illnesses. In a survey conducted by Freedom from Fear among 50,000 individuals, the above reasons were also confirmed.

The National Campaign on Anxiety and Depression Awareness will be a year-long public education campaign to educate the public about the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depressive illnesses and guide them to treatment networks.

There is no cost to join.  As a member you will receive many opportunities such as being listed in the referral room on Freedom From Fear’s website. www.freedomfromfear.org.

You will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of excellent educational tools including, turnkey kits and videos at discount prices. We strongly recommend using our screening questionnaire, which is a modified version of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Visit our bookstore for more information about the MINI.  The Bookstore also offers other excellent educational materials that can be purchased online.

To reach the public FFF has designed an extensive advertising and public relations campaign. These efforts will include:

---- National Anxiety& Depression Awareness Week May 4-10, 2008 is a free program to educate the public about anxiety and depressive illnesses and to offer individuals the opportunity to receive a free screening for these illnesses. Since its inception over 1 million individuals have been screened.

---- Multiple press releases about mental illness issues including research, public health concerns, and human-interest stories.

---- Programs featuring video media tours, video news releases, radio media tours.  These programs are on national and local television stations yearly throughout the country.

---- An ongoing active public service announcement program.

---- Print media in publications such as Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal, US News and World Report, etc. as well as local and national newspapers including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, etc.

---- Promotion of the new film, The Pain of Depression: A Journey through the Darkness, produced by Freedom From Fear--- scheduled to begin airing Fall 2007. FFF has produced an award winning film for Public Television, Afraid of People.  It is in its fourth year of airing on Public Television and has reached over 175 million homes.

---- A series of MAT Releases (ready-to-use news and feature articles on mental health issues) that will be distributed to major daily and weekly newspapers throughout the United States.

All of these outreach efforts promote the toll free number and the website so that people can be driven to these opportunities and identify a mental health provider in their area.  When your organization partners with Freedom From Fear, our outreach efforts will enable individuals to learn about the services your organization provides.  Also, an important part of this campaign will be hundreds of community education campaigns in partnership with mental health associations, providers of mental health services, and educational institutions such as colleges and universities.

What Are Your Responsibilities As a Professional Member of the Campaign?
When you receive a call through this network, you will agree to give the caller a free telephone or in person screening about their mental health concerns (approximately 15 minutes).  If you are able to provide the treatment to the caller and you agree on the terms, fine.  If your services are not appropriate, you agree to provide other referrals in your community.
