When the Mind Causes Pain tells the story of real people who suffer with painful physical symptoms that were disrupting their lives. The individuals share their personal stories and their efforts to understand what was causing these problems and how to find relief. When they learned that their emotional state was driving their pain, their journey to recovery began.

In the video, Rollin Gallagher, M.D., M.P.H., President of the American Board of Pain Medicine, explains the physiology of pain. Aaron Beck, M.D., the “Founder of Cognitive Therapy,” provides treatment strategies to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression and relieve the body pain that these illnesses can cause. The Pain of Depression: A Journey Through the Darkness tells the compelling stories of individuals who suffered from clinical depression, a medical illness, which affects more than 20 million Americans each year. Depression affects people of all backgrounds and walks of life, including many famous people throughout history. This film, broadcast on PBS stations nationally, profiled everyday people who experienced depression and tells their stories through their own words.

The documentary also explores the different ways depression can manifest itself, including both emotionally and physically. Individuals may not receive appropriate treatment because the physical impact of depression can mask the illness. The film also examines how family, friends and communities are impacted by the depression of their loved ones.

Throughout The Pain of Depression: A Journey Through the Darkness nationally recognized experts discuss the cutting-edge  research and theories of depression: its neurophysiology, broad range of symptoms, possible treatments and the role of family and friends in an individual’s recovery.

It is our hope that these stories encourage anyone suffering from depression to get help.
