Santa’s workshops are not just at the North Pole. In fact, one was located at the community room at Freedom From Fear. The week before Christmas, Santa’s helpers were kept busy packaging gift boxes for the almost 400 inpatients at the South Beach Psychiatric Hospital. Each box contained a warm winter hat and gloves, socks, a comb, a large body lotion, holiday candy, reading materials, cosmetics for the women and assorted other toiletries. The recipients are folks suffering from chronic and severe mental illnesses. Many have not had any family contact in years and the hospital has been their residence for long periods. The staff reported that the response to getting these holiday gifts was fantastic and put smiles on many faces.
Much thanks to all who donated to making this such a huge success. The program is continuing and will provide supplies and life necessities to patients that will be discharged to independent living situations. The state of New York has mandated that the census in the hospital must be cut by at least half in the next two years. Hopefully the support provided by FFF will help make the patients transition a positive experience. A food pantry is also going to be added to our many efforts.
If you have not donated yet, your support is desperately needed to continue this important and worthwhile outreach.
Many Thanks Mary & the Staff of Freedom From Fear.
Thank you letter from the inpatients at South Beach Psychiatric Hospital
